(De)constructing the apocalypse

The narrative analysis in this chapter deconstructs the picture of CM in these five texts. The analysis reveals a contrast between the capitalist, the radical and the humanitarian discourses, which paint CM in apocalyptic colours and the IPCC’s recent milder tones. To highlight this contrast, two ingredients of the apocalyptic narratives (the securitization of CM and numerical estimates) will be examined more closely, in order to identify the differing approaches employed by the IPCC and the other discourses and thereby to shed light on the convergence.
